The retail business is said to be falling, the offline businesses that is. Well, that’s hardly true because retail business is still flourishing both online and offline. It’s just that more and more business oriented individuals have realized that retail business can best work online because you will have more customers and higher chances of earning money. If you want to start an online retail business of your own, there are certain things to consider especially pricing matters.

Let’s face it, people frequently shop online because of the cheaper or lower prices of products. That is the main reason aside from it being convenient and flexible. Therefore, pricing is a very important matter that you shouldn’t overlook. The prices of your retail products should not be too high to discourage customers nor too low for you to earn a decent profit. You have to familiarize yourself with the methods of retail pricing.

The first method is the keystone. The formula goes – wholesale price times two equals the retail price. Suppose you’re on the retail doll business. Let’s say the doll’s wholesale price is $21. If you multiply the amount by two, you will obtain $42. So the retail price of the doll will be $42.

The second method is dollar markup. The formula goes: the wholesale price plus the dollar markup equals the retail price. All you operating expenses will be included in the markup so that you can surely earn profits. Like the previous example wherein the wholesale price of the doll is $21 and supposing your dollar markup is $19, then the doll’s retail price will be $40.

You must remember that the business image that you make is very important. It will be one of the bases on how long you will stay in the business. Undercutting is not a good move, so for all you beginners out there, the retail price should be just right. This is a way to build your image and keep your customers. If you have a good attitude, then you can keep your old customers and have additional new ones in the future. You see, customers often shop by word of mouth. If your online retail business is good, your current customers will recommend you to others. So don’t do a bad move because you might just lose your customers and profit.

To start an online retail business is not that hard especially if you know what to do. Educate yourself and know the persons to trust. You’re the boss now since you have an online business. You will need to take care of all the things for your business and will not rely on others. You must have the right drive and you should be determined because retail is a serious business. You need to keep a close eye on your competitors; otherwise, your price may not be as competitive. Be ready and conduct your own research.

Pricing matters is part of your task if you want to start an online retail business. Don’t forget about the two methods – keystone and dollar. The formulas used are quite simple and you can do it on your own. Try to conduct further research about the retail pricing formulas so that you can understand it much better. Familiarize yourself so that you can set a competitive price for your retail products.
